DMV Food Desert

This visualization take a closer look at the DMV area. In the first map, DC and Baltimore stands out in the total number of households which don’t have a vehicle. The size of the circles shows the population count beyond 1 mile for urban areas or 10 miles for rural areas from supermarket.

The second plot on the right shows the average share of housing units that are without vehicle and beyond 1 mile from supermarket. Virginia is the highest, then Maryland, and DC is very low.

The third plot shows average share of population that are kids and who are senior beyond 1 mile and 10 miles from supermarket. The average shares for DC are all very low. There is no big difference between 1 mile and 10 miles. The access rates beyond 10 miles of Virginia for kids and seniors are both higher then Maryland.
